Following the closure of a social club for police officers in London its members decided to do something worthwhile with the money they had.
Members of the now defunct Parliamentary and Diplomatic Social Club decided to give money raised from members’ subscription fees to a number of different charities.
All help the police force or families of police officers.
Former club member and MET police officer Darren stokes, said the club closed as most members had either left or retired and the current members had a new shift pattern which wasn’t compatible with social events.
He said: “The remaining members made a decision to do something good with the money – something worthwhile and to make sure it wasn’t wasted.
“We wanted to do something to try to help as many people as possible.
“When Keith Palmer was murdered, we know COPS looked after his family. And we all know officers who have supported COPS in the past. That’s why we made the decision that some of the money should go to COPS – it’s a great charity that provides for people that are often forgotten.”
He added: “It was a real collective effort – and we’re all so proud that we could help.”
A cheque for £3,250 was recently presented to survivor Maria Driver, sister of reserve deputy sheriff James Driver from Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
