A dedicated COPS fundraiser has been awarded a British Empire Medal in The Queen’s New Year’s Honours.
Hardip Atwal (pictured) has been given his award for “charitable service” which includes tireless fundraising for COPS.
Hardip, a special constable, said he was completely shocked when he found out.
“I was so surprised,” he said. “I love doing what I do, and I never expect anything in return – I’m just not like that.
“So, when I found out about the British Empire Medal I was in complete shock. It was also such an incredibly proud moment.”
He added: “I’m not sure when I’ll actually get the medal, but I plan to take my family with me if I can.”
Hardip, along with best friend and police officer Graham Smith, has organised two hugely successful multicultural balls raising money for COPS, as well as Galloway Blood Bikes.
Taking place in Dumfries, a third one which is promising to be bigger and better than ever is set to tale place later this year.
Hardip, who runs a family grocery business and post office, said: “Graham and I decided we’d do a ball to raise money for charity and it went really went. The next one went even better and now we have big plans for the third.
“It’s a way of helping, and I can’t think of a better charity to help than COPS – there really is no other charity like it.
“As well as being close to our heart, the help and support offered to families of fallen officers is outstanding. No one wants to be a part of it but when you are the amount of support and love you get is truly amazing.”
