Huge congratulations to PC Claire Bond whose incredible bravery has been recognised with a prestigious Pride of Britain Award.
Claire, of Staffordshire Police, was severely injured on duty in 2018 while apprehending a suspect who was driving dangerously towards participants in a 10k race.
Last year, Claire completed the same race with her husband Darren and partner PC Dave Mullins, who had pulled her to safety.
Despite the severity of the injuries to her legs, Claire was able to walk the final kilometre of the race, and in doing so raised thousands of pounds for COPS.
Claire told COPS: “I wanted to complete the Stafford 10K in September 2019, to show our resilience and in memory of those who weren’t as fortunate as I was, and to help their loved ones, as mine would have been helped, by raising money for COPS. I chose this charity as my family was extremely close to my heart, in that they may have needed COPS’ help.”
Due to the pandemic, there was no ceremony, so instead Claire was surprised during a trip to ITV Studios to tour the set of The Voice, organised by her husband and Pride of Britain. While sat on the iconic swivelling chair, Claire was serenaded by pop star Olly Murs, who was there to present Claire with her award.
Claire said: “To win a Pride of Britain Award, I am totally honoured. I still can’t get used to it. I was up until 3 o’clock the morning I found out saying, ‘Is this actually happening? This has actually happened hasn’t it?’
“I dedicate this not only to Dave, who saved me, and my husband, who’s been an absolute angel, but to all the police officers in the UK at the moment. It’s a difficult time for everybody, but this is for them. Keep on going, do what you can, and thanks very much.”
